mallrats

i know this one is highly regarded by kevin smith fans, but i didn't see it back when it came out so i don't really have any sort of nostalgia for it.  instead, all i see is poor acting, stilted dialog, and really lame characters.  sure, jay and silent bob are pretty fun, but the rest of the film is pretty terrible.  sorry guys, i like kevin smith too, but this one is not one of his best...

paper heart

an interesting faux documentary about love.

quigley down under

man, i love tom selleck.  i will watch that man in just about anything!  this movie is about a sharp shooter from the u.s. who heads to australia for a job.  the movie is very light hearted and fun for the first half, especially as he comes into town and shows off how good of a shot he is.  but as the film progresses it gets pretty heavy, the subject of the aboriginals and the crazy woman who takes a shining to him take a deeper turn but is done very well.  the bad guy in the film is played by alan rickman.  that should give you some indication of how great this movie is!  love it!

smart people

this movie was pretty good, i always like dennis quaid and ellen page, but thomas haden church can be a hit or miss.  in this one he's a bit annoying as the brother who wont leave quaid's family alone.

velvet goldmine

i don't really remember this one.  my wife totally loves this movie so i feel kinda bad about forgetting it...  if she likes it i'm sure its got to be pretty good, but i've got nothing.

resident evil: afterlife

this movie is not good.  that's true of all the resident evil movies- none of them are good.  but that's kind of beside the point when it comes to these movies.  they are not good, but they are a blast to watch!  for some reason i can't explain, i really love these movies.  i missed the first one, but i have since seen all of them in the theater!  there really is no sense trying to explain the plot, these movies don't have one.  one thing that really stood out about this movie though was its amazing 3D.  this was one of the first movies to actually use the same cameras that they used in avatar, so the 3D was outstanding!  there is a fight scene in this movie that has water falling around them as they fight- when they slow-mo the action during that scene it blew my mind how incredible the 3D was!  probably the best 3D i've ever seen on any screen ever- just mind meltingly surreal!  i would go see this one in the theater in 3D in a heartbeat.
