barbershop

we came across this the other night on tv, i had never seen it so diana wanted me to watch it. she said that it was a favorite of hers and her sister. the story follows ice cube as the owner of a barbershop. he has fallen on some hard times and doesnt really care for the shop he inherited from his father. he decides to sell it to a shady guy who is going to turn it into a strip club. over the course of the film he starts to understand the importance of the barbershop in the community and his own family, so he tries to get it back before its too late. much of the movie is just the people who work in the shop and the locals of the community hanging out and having a good time among friends. cedrick the entertainer, one of the workers in the shop, was funny in this film as the wise-cracking old guy who doesnt care what he says. he's funny, but i dont understand why his wig was so terrible. it was meant to look like he was an older man, greying around the edges, but instead it just look like the put little white clumps of cotton into his wig and called it good. many of the little side plots are fun, like the white guy trying to be black, the two guys who steal an empty atm, and the african barber who is just trying to impress a lady. i can see why this movie spawned a couple sequels (i would consider 'beauty shop' with queen latifah a sequel since the character started off appearing in 'barbershop 2').
