this is the first of two animated hellboy movies. the hellboy animated world is a bit different than the world of the live-action movies, and the world of the comic books. in this animated world prof. bruttenholm is alive and well, he actually goes out on missions with the gang as well.
this adventure one takes hellboy and brings him somewhere we havent seen him before: japan. the story begins when two japanese gods are released and hellboy and the gang have to try and make things right again. the story feels a bit disjointed, more like its a series of individual events strung together to make a story (this thought is confirmed after hearing in the commentary that the whole story stemmed from the image of hellboy with a sword). there are some nice moments, like when hellboy is chased by a bunch of floating heads. over all, it does a decent job of showing itself as a unique entity apart from the movie and comic book, but the story itself is rather weak.
